The IMIR


The Institut de la Macula i de la Retina (IMIR) is a center devoted solely to the treatment and research of the macular, retinal and vitreous medical and surgical conditions. Special dedication to clinical research with Clinical Trials in Phase I,II, and III currently underway, for age-related macular degeneration, both exudative and dry, and for retinal degenerative disorders. Also pre-clinical research in animal models of retinal degeneration.))))))

Dr. Jordi Monés, the director


Dr. Jordi Monés is an ophthalmologist specialised in diseases of macula, retina and vitreous humour. Graduated in Medicine and Surgery by University of Barcelona, he subsequently specialized in Ophthalmology via MIR at Centro de Oftalmología Barraquer and later went on to further training abroad for 3 years. During this time he was granted a Research Fellowship on the Retina in the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary at Harvard University, and he also completed a Clinical Fellowship program in the Hospital San José at the Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education. Back in Barcelona he continued his clinical and research activities at the Hospital Dos de Maig de la Cruz Roja and at other centres of international renown until 2006. He is currently the Director of the Institut de la Màcula i de la Retina, where he is exclusively devoted to the treatment and research of macula, retina and vitreous humour diseases. His particular fields of interest are macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, macular diseases and vitreoretinal microsurgery. Dr. Monés has been one of the closely involved researchers in most of the clinical trials conducted in international centres for the treatment of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) over the last 12 years, and he is an advisory member of various research groups. His work has been widely published in scientific journals and specialized books, and he has given more than 200 lectures at international conferences and congresses. He is a member of 12 scientific societies, among which we may mention the Macula Society, the Retina Society, the American Society of Retina Specialists, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, the European Vision Institute, Euretina and the European Association for Vision and Eye Research.

Dr. Fabio Trindade


Dr. Fábio Trindade is an ophthalmologist specialized in diseases of the macula, retina and vitreous. Graduated as Doctor of Medicine (MD) at the University of Porto and subsequently completed his residency in Ophthalmology at Centro Hospitalar de Coimbra. Continued his studies by doing the First Module of European School for Advanced Studies in Ophthalmology (ESASO) on Vitreoretinal Surgery and a master degree (fellowship program) in Vitreoretina at the Institut de Microcirugía Ocular de Barcelona.

Currently he is a Consultant in Retinal and Vitreal Disease and Surgery at the Institut de la Màcula i de la Retina and Hospital Central do Funchal where he is Head of Department.Exclusively devoted to the treatment and research of diseases of the macula, retina and the vitreous. His particular fields of interest are Retinal Detachments, Macular Holes, Epiretinal Membranes, Diabetic Retinopathy, Myopia and Macular Degeneration.

Has done several scientific presentations in various international congresses and during the last year has been co-investigator of international multicenter clinical trials for the treatment of Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD).
Is member of various international ophthalmologic societies among which the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) and European Society of Retina Specialists (EURETINA).

Marc Biarnés holds a degree in Optometry by the College of Optics and Optometry of Terrassa (EUOOT). Develops its work in the Institute of Macula and Retina as an optometrist and clinical coordinator.

Ana Serrano has a degree in Nursing from the School of Nursing Blanquerna, Universitat Ramon Llull. She currently employed at the Institute of Macula and Retina in the department of diagnostic tests and surgery.

Miriam Garcia holds a degree in Optometry (DOO) in the College of Optics and Optometry of Terrassa (EUOOT) of the UPC and was subsequently formed in Management and Quality Management (UOC). Coordinator of Clinical Trials in the study VIEW-2, she is currently employed at the Institute of Macula and Retina as an optometrist.

Miriam Hijano has studied Optics, Optometry and Contact Lenses (DOO) in the College of Optics and Optometry of Terrassa (EUOOT) of the UPC, and later an expert in Advanced Clinical Optometry at the European University of Madrid (UEM). Currently she is employed at the Institute of Macula and Retina as an optometrist.

Noemí Blanco is the Coordinator of the Institute of the Macula and Retina which is heading the Department of Patient Care, formed by Rosana Cid, Natalia Corpas and Pilar Ruiz.

 

Àlex Soriano is working at the Institute of Macula and Retina as Technician in the operating room and in the audiovisual department.

 
David Bellver develops the task manager at the Institute of Macula and Retina.
