Dr. Jordi Monés

Dr. Jordi Monés is an ophthalmologist specializing in diseases of the macula, retina and the vitreous humour.

A graduated in Medicine and Surgery at the University of Barcelona, he subsequently specialized in Ophthalmology via MIR at Centro de Oftalmología Barraquer and later went on to further his training abroad for a period of 3 years. During this time he was Research Fellow on the Retina in the Massachussets Eye and Ear Infirmary at Harvard University, as well as completing a Clinical Fellowship program in the Hospital San José at the Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education. On his return to Barcelona he continued his clinical and research activities at the Hospital Dos de Maig de la Cruz Roja and at other centres of international renown until 2006.

He is currently the Director of the Institut de la Màcula i de la Retina, where he is exclusively devoted to the treatment of and research into diseases of the macula, retina and the vitreous humour. His particular fields of interest are macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, macular diseases and vitreoretinal microsurgery.

Over the last 12 years he has been one of the researchers closely involved in most of the clinical trials conducted in international centres for the treatment of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and is an advisory member of various research groups. His work has been widely published in scientific journals and specialized books, and he has given more than 200 talks at international conferences and congresses. He is a member of 12 scientific societies, among which we may mention the Macula Society, the Retina Society, the American Society of Retina Specialists, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, the European Vision Institute, Euretina and the European Association for Vision and Eye Research.

Dr. Lluís Arias

Dr. Lluís Arias Barquet is a graduate in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Barcelona (1992) and gained his doctorate at the Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona (2007). He qualified as a specialist in Ophthalmology as a resident intern at the Hospital Universitario de Bellvitge (1994-97), where he has been assistant physician with the Department of the Retina and Vitreous Humour since 1999.

He completed his training with a stay at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami in the summer of 2006. Furthermore, he has been an associate professor at the University of Barcelona Faculty of Medicine since 2004.

His chief areas of interest are age-related macular degeneration, pathological myopia, diabetic retinopathy and surgery of the retina and vitreous humour.

He has participated as head researcher in various international clinical studies devoted to evaluating the safety and effectiveness of photo-dynamic therapy and antiangiogenic drugs in the treatment of macular degeneration.

He is the first author of diverse articles and papers published in high-profile ophthalmological journals such as “Ophthalmology” and the “British Journal of Ophthalmology”. He is a member of different ophthalmological societies, among which we may mention the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the European Society of Retina Specialists (EURETINA) and theSociedad Española de Retina y Vítreo, of which this latter he is a member of the scientific committee.
